The Portable Satellite Navigation market experienced a large, albeit predictable, seasonal surge in sales during December 2007. Over 490 thousand units were sold, representing an increase of over 49% when compared to the same period in 2006.
Such buoyant sales volumes, clearly a result of the array of high street promotions during the festive period, also translated into strong value sales of £76.1 million, a rise of 13.4% on December 2006. This indicates that the effects of price erosion are less marked than in other product areas within the Consumer Electronics market. The average price of a portable navigation unit now stands at just over £155, compared to £205 in December 2006.
Looking at 2007 GfK figures as a whole, total sales volumes reached over 2.3 million, with value sales amounting to £417.9 million – increases of 58.3% and 13.5% respectively on the previous year. The increasing affordability of these devices coupled with the periodic updates to ranges by manufacturers should ensure that high volume sales continue to deliver positive value growth in the year ahead.
The share of Internet value sales also rose from 11.7% in 2006 to 14.9% in 2007, thus reflecting not only an increasingly savvy consumer aiming to seek out competitive prices online, but also the ever increasing popularity of online purchasing for small portable devices such as portable navigation units, MP3 Players and digital cameras.
