The UK DSC market is booming; particularly in terms of volume performance, with December 2007 representing the largest number of DSC sales ever, and then some.
The Compact segment alone sold 1,177 million units according to GfK figures; 13.5% more compared to December 2006. SLR sold 54,3 thousand units, 22.7% more than Dec 2006. The combined value of both meant £142,1 million was spent on digital cameras.
DSLR of course held up well in the value stakes with 31.5% value growth on Dec 2006. The value of SLR will almost certainly remain in specialist channels, though we have seen a rise in volume sales via Mass Merchandisers, which clearly impacts upon the Photo/CES channel, and invariably comes at a lower price. This is a space to watch as 2008 unfolds with SLR being the focus for a lot of market activity with new launches and a further increase in new or upgrading users.
Digital Photo Frames were also one of the No. 1 Christmas gifts in 2007 with 560,000 units sold in December, 68% in the two weeks leading up to Christmas.
