In 2009, the additional turnover of the Consumer Electronics market has come from three main product categories: LCD TV, Laptops and Blu-ray DVD Players. The situation has changed dramatically since last year, when more than ten products were helping to drive the market with positive growth.
Moreover, LCD, Laptops and Blu-ray DVD Players growth in value terms has slowed; from +38% in 2008 to +24% in 2009 for the LCD, from +28% to +7% for laptops and from +320% to +87% for the Blu-ray DVD players.
In 2009, the world-wide DVD video players market will represent more than 115 million units sold, worth almost US$15 billion. Over two years, DVD video players sales have decreased in terms of volume (-1% and -7%, respectively in 2008 and 2009) although, the picture is very different in terms of value (+2% and -2% respectively in 2008 and 2009).
Blu-ray DVD players sales (that benefit from a higher average price than classic DVD players) have driven the market in 2009 both in volume (+145%) and in value (+87%) terms. Classic DVD players remain dominant with 88% of total DVD player market units, although additional turnover is only 60% (US$9 billion versus US$6 billion for Blu Ray players).
In terms of geography, the Japanese and North American markets strongly benefit from Blu-ray product sales. In the United States, Blu-ray DVD player sales in units reached 25% of the DVD players market; sales in Japan represent a share in excess of 43%.
GfK expects Blu-ray DVD players to be one of the top-selling products this Christmas. Lastly, it should be borne in mind that Blu-ray DVD player sales are widely understimated due to the fact that these figures do not include PS3 sales.
