The CES 2010 in Las Vegas in January has clearly demonstrated that the driving force behind Consumer Electronics is innovation.

The TV-Video sector is one area that is continually subject to advances in technology. At present, in most Western European countries as well as in North America, Japan and many other Asian countries the TV market purely comprises Flat-TV.

It is obvious, that even within this market, the speed of innovation is moving faster and faster. We can recall the first Flat TVs being launched at the beginning of this century. Meanwhile, increasingly bigger screens populate the market and excellent picture quality with Full HD is now viewed as a matter of course.

The latest development is 3D TV. What began with a handful of cartoon movies, such as "Ice Age III" or "Up" has entered the arena of the major blockbuster, culminating in the recent global success of "Avatar". This will in turn have a significant impact on the approach to private home cinema; Blu Ray Players will soon be available in 3D format.

In addition, this will influence the trend towards multi-ownership in the TV sector, more screens in more rooms at home, more digital TV reception, more TV sets, along with increasing Internet connectivity. These developments will open additional gateways to the world.

In 2010 GfK Retail and Technology expect 244 million TV sets to be sold worldwide, growth of +10% in volume terms. Of these, almost three quarters will be Flat-Screen TVs.
