German Travel Booking Index Reveals Promising Outlook

Tourism 23 February 2010
Germany, Tourism

In Germany's travel shops, bookings are on the increase as they generated a turnover plus of 1.4 percent in January; the strongest booking month of the year. Thus the stationary distribution index has risen now in the fifth consecutive month above the related periods of the previous year. The travel season this summer is now at -1.3 percent in cumulated terms, after a turnover growth in January by a half percent, and a 1.4 percent increase versus the previous month.

Recalling the weak season of last year, one cannot refer to it as a lingering recovery, but booking turnovers in the most recent months have shown a rising tendency. For the travel months May, August and October, bookings are already above last year's level in terms of accrued value, but on the other hand the travel months of June, July and September are still between four and approximately eight percent behind last year.

Even the winter season 2009/2010, which expires in the travel month of April, improved totals definitely in January: a turnover loss shrinking by two percent to the actual backlog of now 7.8 percent. January as a travel month suffered losses, however, being the third in the same season. February and March in contrast are supposed to close with firm increases above previous year's level.

Around 29 percent in all turnovers gained through bookings in January are spent for the running winter season. In turnover value, more than a half (55%) were related with a summer holiday between May and August 2010.

The GfK Tourism Distribution Panel

Evaluations are based on booking data from approximately 1,200 travel agencies, which convey a representative picture of the stationary distribu-tion in Germany. A constant sample of 340,000 booking entries at average is fed into GfK’s systems every month and projected to the total market with utmost accuracy. Hence, evaluations of the Tourism Distribution Panel of GfK allow plausible conclusions on the booking habits of German tourists.
