Dear Client, dear Reader,
As 2009 draws to a close it is pleasing to report that GfK Retail and Technology achieved sales growth of 5.4% in the third quarter of 2009, especially considering the economic difficulties around the world that still prevail. For the first nine months of the year, the sector achieved a sales increase of 8.3%, whilst in organic terms sales were up 4.1%; a fine achievement considering the financial climate.
Our latest TEMAX reports are showing tentative signs of recovery in some markets in Europe and Asia, which we all hope will bode well for a positive 2010. The Smartphone phenomenon has been a story of continuing triumph in many countries, providing some welcome respite in what has been a testing period.
I am also happy to report that GfK RT’s global expansion continues apace, with the establishment of a presence in India following the creation of GfK-Nielsen India Private Limited. Elsewhere, TSR reporting is due to go live early in 2010 in the Benelux region which will complement our ever-growing Fashion Life panel in Europe. More information on these exciting developments can be found in this quarter's issue.
In October, GfK Retail and Technology was delighted to launch Digital World, heralding a milestone for the electronics industry, which the interview with Business Unit Director Olivier Malandra explains in further depth. Ahead of what we anticipate will be another successful CES in January this is a significant step in providing the industry with a truly global view of the technical consumer goods markets, thanks in part to our relationship with North American industry authority the CEA. Already our findings have produced some interesting, and in some cases surprising results.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy holiday season and a prosperous 2010!
Best regards,
Dr. Gérard Hermet
COO GfK Retail and Technology
