July 2010
There had been some feeling in 2009 and through to 2010 that the Specialist Paint market would be one not to suffer too heavily at the hands of the current economic situation. The thought that consumers would look to use Specialist Paint products to refresh household items rather than replace has not materialised and this is reflected within June 2010’s results. For the month of June, the Specialist Paint market, at a total level, suffered with volume performance down -5%* and value falling -1%* and these figures fit the trend seen so far in 2010.
June, with its good weather spell, has had a greater impact on the seasonal products within the DIY sector. This is evident within the Finishes for Metal category, primarily made up of products for exterior use, which has increased its importance in Specialist Paint with June 2010 now contributing to 33.4% of the market’s volume sales.
It is encouraging to see that the largest category, Finishes for Metal, in June 2010 is showing development on 2009. In terms of volume sold Finishes for Metal grew 0.5%*, whilst price increases saw value sales climb 4%* meaning this category make up 40% of the value sales in Specialist Paint for June 2010.
Drilling down further into the performance of Finishes for Metal, we can see that the Spray element has actually declined -11%* in volume and -7%* in value, the consumer perhaps looking to save the surrounding plant life as they refresh their railings? Looking at pack size contribution, the 250-374ml and 500-999ml - the most significant, grew 8.2%* and 5.1%* respectively in June.
Let’s hope these positive sales continue through the remaining summer months for Finishes for Metal and help to improve the overall Specialist Paint performance for 2010!
