Sunny Start to Consumer Electronics Summer
Following in the footsteps of May, June provided a bumper month of growth for Consumer Electronics, with market value increasing by an impressive 18.7%. The main proponent for this was a jump of 31.2% in value of the Television market, which can be attributed to continued World Cup demand, particularly in mass merchandisers and electrical multiples.

Noteworthy Performance by Notebooks
After a difficult year, following the global financial crisis which saw consumer and business spending falling, data for the first six months of 2010 has revealed that the IT market is now in 3.2% value growth in comparison to the same period last year. Data from Q1 and Q2 has delivered some interesting insight into the performance of the IT market and as to where the market might be heading as we move into the second half of the year.

Mobile Accessories Returns To Growth
The majority of Telecoms is back into growth in June 2010 compared to 2009, helped by the low sales experienced in 2009. While Mobile Broadband and Mobile handsets grew due to the flexibility of the prepay packages and strong price promotions, Landline telephones declined due to strong sales in 2009. Excluding Christmas which saw a moderate rise, Mobile Accessories has maintained steady sales over the past nine months, varying by just 4% volume and 9% value since October, averaging out at 566,000 sales generating £7.8million a month.

Digital Camera Sales worth over £385 Million so far this Year and Rising
With over half the year complete, the Photo/Imaging market remains in a relatively positive growth position with GfK figures stating it has exceeded £615 million in sales so far this year. Six categories within photo/imaging have registered positive growth, including the major category of Digital Cameras. Looking at the changeable lens category, this has been helped by the growth of the compact system camera market, fuelled recently by several new brands entering this market in addition to new models from existing brands. Consequently, the total changeable lens market posted growth of 14.9% in value.

World Cup Fever comes to Consumer Electronics
In May 2010, total Consumer Electronics value grew by 4.8% on May 2009, with the main responsibility lying with the 9.8% value growth in the Television market. This is due in part to the build up for the World Cup which has seen widespread promotion across not only televisions, but nearly every Consumer Electronics category. The television sales have been predominantly from the larger screen sizes, with notable growth in 40-42” televisions, which now make up 27% of the LCD market. Also in May, we have seen the continued uptake of 3D televisions, which were responsible for £7.5 million in sales.
